CLUTCH FREE THROW SHOOTING PUSHES PANTHERS PASS GRAMBLING STATE

GRAMBLING, La. -- The Prairie View A&M men’s basketball won their second straight game as they defeated Grambling State 92-87 for the season sweep on Monday.



This was the first time in the era of Byron Smith that the Panthers were able to walk away with a win from the Frederick Hobdy Arena. Senior guard Gary Blackston also reached the 1,000 point club shooting 22 points to give him a 1,007 career points.


Both teams went scoreless for the first couple of minutes before a three pointer from senior Dennis Jones gave PVAMU the 3-0 lead. A layup from Blackston then put the Panthers up 5-3 over GSU. After coming to a tie four times in four minutes, a made jumper by junior guard Gerard Andrus put PV up by one at 13-12 with 11:20 left to play.


PVAMU trailed by one before a fast break layup from Jones restored their 15-14 lead at the 10:02 mark. The game was tied at 20 as a made three-pointer from Chancellor Ellis pushed the team ahead 23-20 with 7:42 left in the half. PV  went on a 5-0 run led by a dunk from Blackston as the team held a 28-22 advantage over the Tigers.


Back-to-back three pointers from Jones extended the team’s lead 34-27 at the 3:26 mark. After a fast play from GSU, Blackston followed with a layup and returned the team’s lead to seven with just under two minutes left in the first half.


The Panthers closed out the first half leading 38-33 on a last minute jumper from Andrus in the paint. Jones led the team with 13 points to close out the half.


Another three pointer from Jones got the Panthers going in the second half, as he scored the team’s first five points of the period, to extend the teams lead 43-40 at the 17:32 mark. PVAMU trailed by five until a layup from junior forward Devonte Patterson brought the deficit down to 49-46 with 15:24 remaining.


The teams tied at 49, before two back-to-back layups by Jones and junior guard Antione Lister gave PV the 53-49 lead. A three pointer from Lister put the Panthers ahead 58-44 at the 11:34 mark. PVAMU then trailed by one until a made jumper from Ellis restored a one point lead at 60-59.


Once again the game was tied this time for a final time at 61, a personal 4-0 run by Blackston lifted the team up 65-61 over GSU. Following, a made three pointer by Ellis to extend the team’s lead 68-62. Blackston then answered with a three pointer of his own, allowing PVAMU the 71-64 lead. A made jumper from Andrus gave Prairie View A&M the 74-67 advantage over the Tigers with just under three minutes left in the game.


After going 18-2 on free throws in the final two minutes of play, PVAMU was able to walk away with the 92-87 win.


Jones led the team with 23 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Blackston also had five rebounds, and two assists. Ellis contributed with 11 points and three rebounds.

The Panthers will return home to face Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Baby Dome.
