PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Junior Dalton Horner finished with three hits in five tries and drove in two runs as the Prairie View A&M baseball team closed out its three-game series with a 9-2 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff to take two games out of three from the Golden Lions.
Horner went 3-for-5 from the plate, and freshman Daylan Luza went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in as the Panthers tallied nine hits in the win.
Starter junior Kyle Smith got the win on the mound for the Panthers after pitching 8.0 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out seven batters.
PVAMU opened the bottom of the first with one run to take an early 1-0 lead. Daniel Lingua led the Panthers with a walk to land on base, before Horner doubled to score Lingua. The Panthers scored another run in their frame of the second inning. Tyler Gordon reached base on a walk to be the first base runner on for the Panthers. Luza reached base on a fielders’ choice advancing Gordon. Both players stole base, allowing Gordon to score after an error by the catcher and advancing the Panthers lead 2-0.
The Golden Lions scored two runs in the third inning to match the Panthers at two-all. Luza led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field, prior to Lingua doubling down the middle to advance Luza to third. Both Lingua and Luza stole base adding another run to the Panthers runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Prairie View added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off of Horners’ home run to go up 6-2. Caleb Gilder singled after Horners’ home run to land on base for the Panthers. Mark Kirkland singled off a bunt advancing Gilder to second. Tracy Warren also singled to load the bases for PVAMU, before Gordon grounded out scoring Gilder. On a sac-fly by Luza Kirkland scored to close out the three run inning.
The Golden Eagles went scoreless as the Panthers added three final runs in the seventh inning, a lead which would hold UAPB and earn the 9-2 victory.
Seventh inning leadoff batter Alex Martinez reached base on an error to leadoff the base running. Horner singled to advance Martinez to second. On a ground ball out by Gilder both Horner and Martinez advanced to their consecutive bases. After a pitching change, Kirkland was walked to load the bases. On a wild pitch each player advanced with Martinez scoring. Warren reached base on another walk, which loaded the bases once again. Luza doubled to right scoring Kirkland and Warren to seal the game with a 9-2 victory.
The Panthers improves to 3-8 on the season and 2-1 in SWAC play. Prairie View A&M will be back in action on Wednesday, March 6 when they take a visit to Victoria, Texas for a single game against Houston—Victoria at 6 p.m.
