ATLANTA, Ga. (November 6, 2018) – Terraris Saffold (Central State) was named Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Robert Cummings (Benedict) earned Defensive Player of the Week, released by the league office on Monday.
Gabriel Ballinas (Albany State) was also tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week alongside Tyrone Mixon (Clark Atlanta) who earned Newcomer of the Week.
OFFENSIVE – Terraris Saffold, Central State
Running Back | 6’0 | 180 | Hayneville, Ala.
In the final game of the 2018 season, CSU running back Terraris Saffold set a career-high with 214 rushing yards along with one touchdown in a 45-22 win over Lane College. Saffold averaged 7.9 yards per carry. He finishes the season among the SIAC leaders in rushing yards (874) and touchdowns (11).
DEFENSIVE – Robert Cummings, Benedict
Defensive Back | 6’0 | 190 | Macon, Ga.
Cummings had 4 tackles (3 solo) with a forced fumble and an interception as Benedict closed out the season with an 18-0 shutout over Kentucky State. Cummings served as a vital part of the Tiger defense that held the Thorobreds to two net yards rushing.
SPECIAL TEAMS – Gabriel Ballinas, Albany State
Kicker/Punter | 5’9 | 190 | Guadalupe, Mexico
In the regular season finale, Gabriel Ballinas connected on four field goals during the day, including one from 33 and 41 yards in the first quarter to put ASU in front of Fort Valley State in the Fountain City Classic. On the season, Ballinas completed 93 percent of his field goals and PATs.
NEWCOMER – Tyrone Mixon, Clark Atlanta
Linebacker | 6’0 | 200 | Atlanta, Ga.
Tyrone Mixon, a freshman linebacker for Clark Atlanta, tied for the team high of nine tackles during CAU's 30-13 win over Morehouse Saturday. Mixon, who is from Atlanta, had three solo tackles and six assisted tackles, and one tackle for a loss. Mixon was part of a defense that held the SIAC's top scoring offense to just 13 points - less than half of their season average of 27 ppg coming into the game.
